Abstract
The realm of invisible and microscopic particles is inextricably fused with both matter and meaning. Even the smallest parts of matter are capable of producing significant explanations of Ontology and Epistemology through a series of deeply entrenched ideas. This paper explores the power of microscopic particles and their effects on macroscopic notions. It also explores the consequences that microscale materiality has on philosophical phenomena and its entanglement with humanity. Artemis by Andy Weir and Hinterlands by William Gibson offer an innovative, intriguing space to explore the agential relations between matter and humanity and the need for new materialist thought to emphasise the prominence of material agency. It draws on the inevitable relational nature between the Human and Nonhuman to emancipate new material discourses from being discriminated against by the metanarratives of anthropocentric discourses. The paper also explores the reinforcing elements that sustain the viability of the new material realm and elucidates their relational nature. The need for a new materialist reading through contrapuntal and synchronous examinations aims to bring out a newfound visibility on the perceptions of new materialism, material agency and entanglement.
